Kansas City area MO state route history
The dates are based on MoDOT maps on hand. Gaps exist in current collection: 1968, 1959, between 1941 and 1945, between 1934 and 1939.
MO 1
- Current route from Armour and Prather roads to MO 152 at Indiana.
- First appears on 1940 map along present route south of US 69 (Vivion Road).
- By 1954 issue: extended north along former SR J (Antioch Road) to MO 152 (Barry Road). SR A & H became MO 152 at the same time.
- By 1961 issue: extended to Armour and Swift with the truncation of MO 10 to US 69 at Liberty Drive.
- About 1968: truncated to I-35 at Armour.
- By 1974 issue: truncated back to original south end at Armour with opening of MO 210.
- By 1991: rerouted north of 64th Street using north Prospect and truncated at north end with new MO 152 freeway.
MO 7
- Current route from I-44 near Laquey to US 24 in eastern Independence. Signed as a north-south route but runs east-west between Harrisonville and Laquey.
- First appears in 1926, from US 50 to Harrisonville.
- Portion from Harrisonville to Clinton opened in 1934 as MO 35.
- Extended north to US 24 by 1939. Also eastern portion (then MO 35) extended to Warsaw. Also opened at the time were the portion between MO 5 and Montreal as SR T, and east of Richland as SR A.
- By 1948 SR A extended to SR T. Portion between US 65 and Edwards opened as SR D.
- 1950 portion east of Harrisonville open as MO 35.
- Full length signed as MO 7 about 1959.
MO 9
- Current route from I-70 exit 2F (Oak Street) to I-29 exit 9 (Barry Road)
- Originally was MO 59 and part of MO 1 (1921 system)
- Section south of current MO 9/US 169 interchange became US 71 in 1926.
- In the 1930s with the creation of US 59, the portion between then-US 71 and Parkville became MO 45, and north of Parkville became MO 9.
- By 1960 the southern section which was US71 became Business 71 with the opening of I-29.
- About 1968 the 64th Street section of MO 45 opened, with the former MO 45 south of 64th Street becoming MO 9.
- By 1970, Business 71 decommissioned. Portion north of Swift became MO 9; portion using Swift was Alternate US 169.
- 1971: entire route signed as MO 9.
MO 10
- Current route US 69 in Excelsior Springs to US 65 in Carrollton.
- Original 1921 route, extending from Kansas City to Monroe City.
- Portion east of Carrollton became US 24 in 1927.
- On 1934 map, west end shown at Oak and 6th Streets.
- 1940 to 1960: west end was shown at Armour and Swift.
- By 1961: west portion truncated to US 69 at Liberty Drive. Winn Road portion was decommissioned, and the west end became the south end of MO 1.
- By 1980: west end truncated to Excelsior Springs. Portion east of MO 33 became SR H; portion west of MO 33 decommissioned.
MO 12
- Current route: Truman Road between I-435 and Osage Street in Independence.
- Original route along 12th and 15th Streets (current Truman Road) from the Paseo to Noland (1927).
- Started as original route of US 24.
- Became MO 240 by 1939.
- Became MO 12 by 1952.
- East end truncated to current location between 1941 and 1945.
- West end truncated to I-435 by 1972.
MO 33
- Current route from MO 291 in Liberty to MO 6 in Maysville.
- Part of original 1921 system, starting at original MO 1 (later US 71) at current intersection of MO 9 and 283, along Oak Street ( former US 169), US 169, MO 116 and the portion of current MO 33 north of Plattsburg.
- By 1926 the southern end was truncated to Grayson with the portion south becoming MO 1 and later US 169.
- By 1939: portion between US 169 and Plattsburg became MO 116, and portion from Plattsburg extended south to Liberty along current route.
MO 45
- Current route from I-29 exit 5 to US 59 near Atchison.
- Originally proposed in 1930, with south end at current junction of MO 9 and MO 45.
- In creation of US 59, extended south along former MO 59 to then-US 71.
- By 1969: 64th Street section opened to I-29. Portion south of intersection with MO 9 became MO 9.
MO 58
- Current route: SR D west of Belton to US 50 six miles west of Warrensburg.
- Portion east of original MO 1 (current MO 291) part of 1921 system.
- By 1926 portion east of Pleasant Hill opened.
- Extended west to Belton by 1939.
- Extended west to SR D (taking over former SR H) by 1954.
MO 78
- Current route from I-435 exit 61 (23rd Street) to MO 7 in eastern Independence.
- Original route commissioned in the early 1940s, formerly a Jackson County route, from US 40 along Van Brunt to 23rd Street then east to current east end.
- Shown truncated to 23rd and Van Brunt in 1964 issue.
- Truncated to I-435 by 1972.
MO 92
- Current route: Missouri River at Leavenworth to US 69 at Excelsior Springs.
- Portion west of Platte City part of 1921 system.
- Extended east to US 169 by 1930 but shown as SR T on 1934 map.
- Full length opened as MO 92 by 1939.
MO 150
- Current route: 135th Street at State Line road in Kansas City to US 50 in Lone Jack.
- Original route followed 135th Street east, Holmes Road south and 147th Street east, and opened between 1934 and 1939 as SR P, A, B and K.
- Designated MO 150 by 1948.
- Expressway opened between State Line Road and US 71 by 2001, with a more direct route between State Line Road and 147th at Holmes.
MO 152
- Current route from I-435 exit 24 to MO 291 in Liberty (may go as far east as Ridge Avenue).
- Originally built as SR T, A and H between 1934 and 1939 (Barry Road and the former Gashland Road).
- Portion designated as SR A and H became MO 152 in 1954. East end reached MO 10 at Mill and Terrace in Liberty.
- East end truncated to Kansas and Ridge in 1980 with truncation of MO 10.
- By 1985: expressway between Brighton and I-35 opened with opening of part of I-435.
- By 1993: extended west to I-435 (replacing SR T) in freeway project.
- By 1997 relocation open west of US 169.
- By 1999 relocation open east (finishing current route) east of US 169.
- 2006: freeway finished between the two interchanges with I-435.
MO 210
- Current route from I-35 at Armour (exit 6A) to MO 10 west of Richmond.
- Originally built as SR E east of Missouri City by 1939.
- Extended to current MO 291 by 1945.
- First appears as MO 210 in 1954 issue.
- By 1974 extended west to I-35.
- Between 1990 and 2005 portion east of MO 291 realigned along higher-quality route.
MO 269
- Current route: Chouteau Trafficway between MO 210 and I-35.
- First appears in 1954: from the Chouteau Bridge to Winn Road (then MO 10).
- Temporary extension south to US 24 in 1956: Chouteau, Front, Askew (?), Gardner and Chestnut.
- By 1960: Route extended south to US 24 via Chouteau and Belmont.
- Extended north to I-35 in 1961 with the truncation of MO 10.
- By 1985 south end truncated back to MO 210.
MO 283
- Current route from MO 9 to US 69, as part of KC's Oak Street Trafficway.
- Originally appears as Alternate US 169 by 1939.
- Became MO 283 by 1970 issue.
MO 291
- Current route: US 71 in Harrisonville to I-435 exit 45.
- Original route went north from Harrisonville to US 50, then west to Noland Road, then north to US 24, then back east to current MO 291, then along Cookingham Drive to current I-29.
- Appears as MO 1 between Harrisonville and US 40 in original 1921 plan.
- By 1926, originally designated as MO 35.
- Designated as US 71 Bypass between 1934 and 1939.
- Realigned to current route by 1957.
- First shown as MO 291 in 1972 issue.
- I-470 duplex between exits 10 and 16 first appears by 1983.
- North end truncated to I-435 (current end) by 1985.
MO 350
- Current route I-435 exit 66 to I-470 exit 7B (mostly also marked as Blue Parkway).
- Part of MO 12 in original 1921 plan.
- Became part of US 50 in 1926.
- Became MO 350 in 1980 with opening of 7 western miles of I-470 and rerouting of US 50 along I-470 and I-435 into Kansas.
