Interstate Enhancement Concept
A common roadgeek hobby is to devise a fantasy expansion of the Interstate highway system. This page and the linked pages have my concept using three courses of action. The maps are adapted from a 1958 map provided by Steve Alpert.
The first two maps linked by the following thumbnails show the Interstate system as completed by summer 2006 and those under construction.
The following map shows the Interstate system with future FHWA routes.
My first course of action involves the use of the current numbers for Interstates 39, 43, 88 and 99.
TABLE / MAPMy second course of action uses the current I-39 and renumbers 43, 88 and 99.
TABLE / MAPMy third and preferred course of action is the Great Midwest Overhaul, renumbering all north/south Interstates between I-35 and I-57 to get them in proper numerical sequence. This would be a real pipe dream since apparently the non-duplication (IH vs. US) rule carries more weight than the sequence rule.
TABLE / MAPHere are some details of certain areas of interest in the concepts.
